Chapter 25

The smells of waffles and coffee met me when I let myself into Tillie’s house. The dogs ran to greet me then flopped onto their backs so I could give them belly rubs. As soon as I stood, they ran back to the kitchen, where, no doubt, Tillie was spoiling them rotten.

Brian kissed me then handed me a cup of coffee made just the way I liked it, with a splash of milk. He had dark circles beneath his eyes, and his hair stood on end, like he’d been running his fingers through it.

“I hope you slept better than I did.” Brian gave me a warm waffle with fresh sliced strawberries on top. “I woke up at five and took the dogs for a run, then I’ve been hanging out over here with Gram and Vannie, until she had to leave for work. I didn’t want to wake you after I got in so late.”

“I slept okay once I finally fell asleep around two thirty. But you needn’t have worried about waking me up. I never even heard you getting up, nor did I hear your text.” Before I sat down to eat, I poured more coffee into Tillie’s dainty teacup. She preferred to drink it that way instead of using a larger mug. “I talked to Brad this morning.”

“Oh? Anything new going on with the boys?” Tillie asked as she added cream to her coffee.

“Gabe was commanded, according to Brad, to formally appear for an interview with Detective Hawkins this morning.”

“That can’t be good,” Brian said. “Have you made any progress in finding any more suspects?”

“Maybe one or two, but their identities are completely unknown. And it’s a guess on my part if they’re even associated with Zara’s death.” I wanted to pull my hair out. The last murders I’d been involved with seemed to have too many suspects to weed through. This time, there were pretty much zero, because in my heart of hearts, I knew Gabe didn’t do it. Right? No. I couldn’t let my mind even consider the possibility. “The only other potential person was the woman who works at the place they got their tuxes. But it turns out she has an ironclad alibi.”

“You told the detective what you’ve found, haven’t you?” Brian asked.

“I left him a voice mail, but I haven’t heard anything back.” Nor did I expect to either.

Tillie twisted the buttercup-yellow linen napkin in her hands. “I know Brian gave you a quick update on Theodore late last night. David called me at six. Theodore borrowed David’s Mercedes without asking and took off sometime before then. He hasn’t been able to track Theodore’s cell phone either.”

“You mean he stole David’s Mercedes.” Brian’s words were bitter. “It’s just like him to come home and wreak havoc on our lives then disappear.”

My heart fell. If Theodore had been falling down drunk at one that morning, he wouldn’t have been in any condition to drive anytime soon. And if he got caught violating his
